As the evening wore on, I grew more and more tired. When the clocks chimed midnight, I decided not to wait up any longer. My pillow felt rather lumpy and I had trouble sleeping. The more I tried, the lumpier it felt. It was as if there was something inside it, or under it.
I turned on the light beside the bed and lifted my pillow. I almost fell off the bed altogether in my haste to get away from the mouse. When it didnât move, I ventured closer. The poor creature was dead, somewhat squashed from the weight of my head. By the look of it, it had died some time ago.
Which meant someone had put it there, after its demise.
Willie was going to get a piece of my mind in the morning. In fact, why wait until then? I used a handkerchief to pick up the mouse by the tip of its tail and carried it to her room. Instead of putting it under the pillow, I placed it on top. She couldnât fail to notice it.
I fell asleep and awoke mid-morning alongside Matt. He stirred and rolled over, snuggling into me.
I rested my head on his chest. âAny luck?â
âAbercrombie wasnât hiding at any of the properties,â he mumbled.
âWhat about Hope? Did Willie see her?â
âApparently sheâs fine.â He lifted his head and glanced at the clock on the mantel then dropped back onto the pillow with a sigh. âOnly twelve more hours.â
We would both be watching the time tick slowly by today as we waited for Gabe to depart this evening. Every hour that passed was one closer to his freedom and safety. But until I knew heâd docked in America, anxiety would never be far away. So much could go wrong, not just in London, but on the boat too. If the police suspected heâd left the country, they would wire their American counterparts and all the main ports would be monitored. If the boat didnât dock privately as promised, Gabe would be arrested and deported back here for execution.
